Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in the military cantonment of Mhow in Madhya Pradesh. Popularly known as Babasaheb Ambedkar or BR Ambedkar, he was the architect of the Constitution of India and was India’s first Minister of Law and Justice. This year is Dr BR Ambedkar’s 126th birth anniversary. Dr Ambedkar was a Dalit and spent his entire life fighting against social discrimination in India. He had a doctorate in economics and political science from Columbia University and the London School of Economics. In the Constitution of India, Ambedkar guaranteed freedom to the citizens and introduced the abolition of untouchability and reservation for jobs for all reserved categories.
Ambedkar opposed Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. In 1990, B R Ambedkar was posthumously honoured with India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna. Ambedkar Jayanti is a public holiday in India. On this day, followers of Ambedkar carry out processions at Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai and the Deeksha Bhoomi in Nagpur.
