Popular cultural festivals in Mizoram
- Mim Kut : The Mim Kut festival is normally observed in the months of August and September, following the cultivation of maize. People observe this festival by dancing, singing, drinking, and eating.
- Pawl Kut: The Pawl Kut festival refers to a straw harvesting festival since the word Pawl stands for straw. The festival is normally held in the month of December every year.
- Chapchar Kut : The Chapchar Kut is one more important festival which is observed in the month of March, following the conclusion of their most difficult job of Jhum maneuver, that is, forest-cleaning (removal of the leftovers of burning).
Famous places in Mizoram
- Tualchang is the biggest monolith in Mizoram. Tualchang is situated near Tualchang village in the Aizwal district. Tualchang is a line of stone blocks.
- Sibuta LungSibuta Lung is one of the most popular sites in Mizoram. Sibuta Lung is a memorial stone that was erected about 300 years by the Palian chief. The memorial Sibuta Lung offers a story of jilted love and lust for revenge.
- Tomb of Vanhimailan was bulit in the memory of Vanhimailan Sailo. Vanhimailian Sailo was a great chief who ruled over Champhai. It overlooks the vast Champhai plain.
- Phawngui, also known as the Blue Mountain, is the highest peak of Mizoram and is considered to be the abode of Gods. Phawngpui located in the Chhimtuipui district, is famous for rhododendron and orchids.
- Mangkahia Lung is a memorial stone which was erected in the memory of Mangkhaia in 1700 AD. It is a very large memorial stone also called Mangkhaia’s stone.
- Mizoram State Museum has wildlife specimen as well as tribal artifacts and weapons, musical instruments and clothing from various tribes. It reflects the historical and cultural journey of Mizoram.
Facts About Mizoram
- The name is derived from Mi (individuals), Zo (lofty place, for example, a slope) and Ram (land), and thus ‘Mizoram’ implies “land of the hill people”.
- The very famous Parshuramkund Kund dedicated to Lord Parshuram situated in Lohit district and Tawang Monastery in Kameng district attracts huge number of devotees making it a locale with huge religious significance.
- To take control on insurgency government was forced to bomb its own territory using Toofani and Hunter Jet fighters in Aizwal (Mizoram) on March 5 and 6, 1966.
- Mizos are believed to have migrated to the region from China prior 300 years ago.
- Mizoram is a highly literate agrarian economy, but suffers from slash-and-burn jhum or shifting cultivation, and poor crop yields.
- The biggest river in Mizoram is Chhimtuipui, also known as Kaladan, Kolodyne or Chimtuipui. It originates in Chin state in Burma and passes through Saiha and Lawngtlai districts in the southern tip of Mizoram, goes back to Burma’s Rakhine state.
- The Palak lake is the biggest in Mizoram and covers 30 hectares (74 acres). The lake is situated in Saiha district of southern Mizoram. It is believed that the lake was created as a result of an earthquake or a flood.
- Tropical Semi Evergreen, Tropical Moist Deciduous, Subtropical Broadleaved Hill and Subtropical Pine Forests are the common vegetation types found in Mizoram.
- Mizoram is host to numerous species of birds, wildlife and flora. About 640 species of birds have been identified in the state, many of which are endemic to Himalayan foothills and southeast Asia.
- According to 2011 census, Mizoram had 1,036,115 people (95% of total) classified as Scheduled Tribe, the highest concentration of protected tribal people in all states of India
